Passion for your subject and a willingness to hand over some of the classroom dynamics to the students are two  components in helping build a community around your classroom texts. When students sense that you are genuinely interested in having them move from being an "outside" in your discipline to becoming an "insider" , then you will see a shift in attitude and a willingness to change from learned patterns to more disciplinary ways of reading and thinking.
